kister scheithauer gross opens the exhibition evolving structures at the Aedes Architecture Forum in Berlin on 11 July 2025 at 6.30 pm. The exhibition showcases four transformations of existing buildings from various historical periods and typologies. Projects that are still under construction are deliberately presented to convey ksg’s approach to existing structures. For instance, we are converting the vacant Quelle mail order centre in Nuremberg, designed by Ernst Neufert in the 1950s and 1960s, into a charismatic urban quarter. In Wuppertal, the late 19th-century former federal railway headquarters is being given a new function as an open building for the university and city administration. Meanwhile, the former 1970s postal distribution centre is being converted for new adaptive use. Finally, the transformation of the former Luitpoldkrankenhaus hospital in Würzburg for the University of Würzburg’s Institute of Anatomy involves negotiating the preservation of the building’s features in the face of new demands. The exhibition uses structures, models and photo essays by Schnepp Renou to reveal the specific measures that enable a new activation of the existing building for each of the four projects. At the same time, the exhibition raises questions about the extent and nature of changes to existing structures, a process guided by KSG’s respect for the identity of the original design. This becomes the starting point for targeted structural interventions. The exhibition shows how the projects regain their faded presence thanks to the sustainable conversion of the existing buildings.
