To portray the urban landscape of Dakar, Senegal, Schnepp Renou make the choice of « Superimposed Dreams », a video series with photographic qualities. When their images start moving and become animated, the details in motion illuminate the stillness of their frames. Although the perspectives remain static, their depths become generous and offer a new point of view on the urban challenges that Dakar is currently facing: fast-paced demographic growth, climate change and remnants of a colonial past.
Schnepp Renou’s visual approach enables to feel the paradox of Dakar’s architectural transformations. The urgent need of infrastructures, of frames, makes it even more compelling to witness the disappearing fragments of now hidden inhabitant stories, invisible life habits and secret histories of these places.
“Superimposed Dreams” is an invitation to invent the future memories of Dakar, of what passes through architectural and photographic frames and escapes us: a multiplicity of stories yet to be told - of minor buildings, small-scale communities and atmospheric spatial feelings - like the micro movements of the moving images of this series suggest.
